While Electric Power Steering (EPS) has become common in modern commuter cars, Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS) Gears remain the gold standard for drivers who crave authentic road feedback. But how exactly does this pressurized system turn a slight nudge of the wheel into a powerful mechanical force?
The Hydraulic Concept
At its core, a hydraulic steering gear is a force multiplier. It relies on a belt-driven pump to circulate hydraulic fluid under high pressure. When driving straight, this fluid bypasses the power cylinder and returns to the reservoir. The magic happens the moment you initiate a turn.
The “Brain”: The Rotary Valve
The most critical component of the hydraulic assembly is the rotary valve. Located at the base of the steering column, this torsion-bar-controlled valve detects torque. When you turn the wheel, the valve opens specific ports, directing high-pressure fluid to one side of the power cylinder piston while venting the other side.
The Power Piston
This pressure differential creates immense force against the piston, which is attached to the steering rack. This hydraulic push assists the mechanical movement, making it easy to turn heavy wheels even at a standstill.
Why Hydraulics Endure
Despite the rise of electronics, HPS gears are prized for their “hydraulic feel.” Because the fluid connection is continuous, the driver can feel the texture of the road and the grip limits of the tires, offering a connection that electric motors struggle to replicate.
